There’s No Doubt Down Unda’s New Edit is Hella Good
Article by: Kate Nelson
Gaining fast traction in the Oklahoma City house scene, Australia native Down Unda is solidifying himself as one to watch. With this latest release, an edit of No Doubt’s 2001 hit “Hella Good,” he flexes his ability to integrate the old favorites into the massive tech house trend. Obscenely fun nostalgia meshes in an excellent formula with a bassline that will make you want to move your feet. The track is an invigorating revisit of an old favorite, bringing the 21 year old song to the forefront of what’s hot in the EDM world right now.
Down Unda, real name Thomas Douglas, originally came to the United States from Brisbane, Australia, to play Division 1 tennis at New Mexico State University. Three years ago, after attending Holy Ship!, he fell into a deep dive of house music, learning all he could about the artists he had seen and the music they made. Shortly thereafter, he recalls telling a coworker, “I think I’m going to start making house music.”
“Over the last three years, I’ve been going brick by brick, learning new techniques, experimenting, creating, and absolutely loving it,” says Down Unda, “I didn’t want to start DJing [live] until I was confident that I could make tracks that were good enough to play in my sets.” This impressive take shows his drive to understand all aspects of the music, from production, to mixing, and everything in between. His dedication to being a student of house music is a breath of fresh air.
Landing his first gig this year in March at Ponyboy in OKC, he since then has been taking the Oklahoma scene by storm, already traveling to other cities in the state and moving up fast from an opener to a closer. He was featured earlier this year on our very own Mothership Radio with a banging mix, and you can catch him closing out Sunlab in Tulsa this Sunday. Currently releasing on SoundCloud, be sure to watch closely as he is proving to have an exponential come up.
